The Barisal Divisional Museum Project
was completed in June 2007 and the museum was scheduled to be opened for the
visitors in June 2008, A huge number of antiques including canons of the
Sultani period, hand and finger print of Queen Nurjahan, sword of Sirajuddowla,
different types of antique statues and coins, survey maps and manuscripts,
mementos of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Aswani Kumar Dutta, poet Jibanananda
Das, bard Mukunda Das and other distinguished personalities have already been
enlisted for collection and display at the museum at Chakhar in the district,
Golam Ferdous, assistant director-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Museum,
performing supervising official of the Barisal divisional museum project,
informed.
History of Collectorate Building and Museum of Barisal district!
Barisal
divisional commissioner and district deputy commissioner offices, citizen
alliances sources said about 200-year-old Barisal Collectorate Building was
declared abandoned after the new district administration complex was built in
the deputy commissioner office compound in the 1980s.
The then authorities tried to dismantle the building and land grabbers tried to construct a supermarket taking the land of the building on lease. All these moves, however, were foiled in the face of movements by local elites and citizens’ groups in 2003 demanding that building be declared as a cultural heritage and turned into a museum.
A gazette notification was published on April 1, 2004 declaring the Barisal Collectorate Building a national heritage and directorate of antiques took over that.

connected both by air and road from Dhaka, Chittagong and Barisal.
Flights are available from Chittagong and Dhaka on United
Airways and Regent Airways. Flights tend to be daily during the high season
(Oct - Apr) but generally drop back to 3-4 flights per week during the summer
and Monsoon (May - Sept).
The private bus companies have offices near Hotel Sea Queen
on the main road, and also down in the Hotel Motel Zone.
